A Gentleman’s Game

Golf is widely considered to be a gentleman’s game. On a golf course, you as a player are fully responsible for your own conduct, and are expected to follow the rules as well as keeping your own score (unless it’s a tournament, where players are more closely audited). As a player at the course, it is demanded of you that you oblige to the code of conduct. There are many rules, and you should adhere to them like the game itself demands.

The rules include playing the ball where it lies, unless conditions make it impossible. Another important rule states that the way you find the court is the way you play it. Should you break a rule, you must apply your own penalty. This way, you can’t get an unfair advantage over any other players. As a golf player, you’re supposed to know when you have broken a rule, and not refrain from applying penalties.

What’s expected of you

Following the rules is obviously non-negotiable, and is in of itself part of the conduct. Honesty and integrity on the course is expected if you want to play golf. Playing the course as it was when you found it also includes leaving it as you found it. This means smoothing the bunkers, replacing the divots and not causing damage to the golf course.

There are no rules that directly forbid failing to do any of these things, but the people who run the course may disqualify players who repeatedly commit misconduct.

Know your rules

In a gentleman’s game such as golf, you better be aware of the rules and how to apply them. If you’re a beginner, you’ll give yourself an advantage finding out what’s expected of you at the course. This way you’ll avoid breaking the rules and suffering the inevitable consequences. Mistakes happen, but if you don’t admit to them and apply the penalties, you’re likely to get disqualified.

Some rules demand that you keep your eyes open, in order for you to estimate certain things. If the ball crosses the penalty area, you may be required to estimate exactly where. Sometimes a ball need to be replaced exactly where it landed, which obviously means you should know where it landed. Decisions as to where the specific location is must be made swiftly, and as precisely as possible.

If the circumstances make it difficult to determine accurately where the ball landed, this will be taken into consideration, even if not everyone agrees with the players decision.
